St. Charles Lwanga School, Kitui
Saint Charles Lwanga School is a Public, Extra County level, Boys Boarding Secondary School located in Kitui County, about 1 kilometer from Kitui Town on the Kitui- Itoleka Road. The student body is culturally diverse, with its population drawn from different communities in Kenya and neighboring East African countries.
The school is named after St. Charles Lwanga, who was a Ugandan Catholic martyr and a significant figure in the history of Christianity in Africa. He lived in the late 19th century and is best known for his steadfast faith and leadership among a group of Ugandan martyrs.
In 1886, Lwanga and his companions were arrested, tortured, and eventually executed for their refusal to abandon Christianity. They were burned alive at Namugongo, near Kampala. St. Charles Lwanga was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964, and he is celebrated as a saint and martyr in the Catholic Church. His feast day is June 3rd, which is also known as Martyrs' Day in Uganda, commemorating the lives of all the Ugandan martyrs.
On 13th March 1965, the foundation stone was laid by His Excellency The Honorable Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the president of the republic of Kenya.
St. Charles Lwanga School is a co-educational institution sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Kitui. It opened its doors to the intake of students on 3rd June 1963. Since then, it has grown in size as well as its population. The school offers educational and boarding facilities to more than 1400 students. The school has a housing system in which each student is placed in one of the 12 houses. House activities are overseen by House Masters and coordinated by House captains.
Admission into St. Charles Lwanga School is considered one of the most selective in the region. Students are admitted strictly on merit, based on their marks in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education. Lwanga School admits over 200 students every academic year.
